Funny Boy - Birthday Edition

Tuesday, I was on the phone, telling my dad that we were getting ready to go somewhere "fun" for my birthday.  My sweet five year old overheard.  He piped up with anticipation in his voice, "Mom, are we going to Chuck E. Cheese for your birthday?"

My quick and sullen reply came without a pause, "No, we are not going to Chuck E. Cheese for my birthday."

Rolling laughter came from the other end of the phone, as Dad enjoyed the conversation from his perspective.

My dad continued to laugh as he reminded me of the time when I was little and I just insisted that , "Mommy really wants this baby doll for Christmas!"

It does seem that the more things change, the more they stay the same.  Glad we can still make you laugh, Dad!

Words To Live By Wednesday - Romans Road

This is the fifth step in the Romans Road:

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
~Romans 1:9-10

It's my birthday, I can . . .

Do you know that old song, "It's my party, I can cry if I want to, cry if I want to . . . . "?  Well, it's been going through my head the last few days, only I've put my own little spin on it.  I keep singing (to myself) "It's my birthday, I can eat what I want to . . . "

Now, before you think me a "little off my rocker", you have to realize that half of my life revolves around food anyway.  I prepare three meals a day, most every day, with some snacks in between.  Then, in between preparing the food, comes cleaning up after meals.  Add in the time and energy meal planning and shopping for food . . . one begins to realize that food is a major part of home-life.  Anyone who has run a home, will understand this.

Usually, when I plan meals, I think of what others would like.  What would my hubby like?  What would the kids like?  What fits the budget?  What is on sale?  All those thoughts order my meal plans.  Well, the last little while, I've taken a different approach.  I've said, "It's my birthday, I can eat what I want to . . ."  Although my official birthday is today, we started last Thursday.  My lovely mother-in-law kept the boys so that Brian (my hubby) and I could have some time together.  We went to the restaurant of my choice.  Nothing super fancy, but it was just what I wanted.

This weekend, I fixed one of my all time favorite meals.  I made the Mexican Lasagna that I blogged about over at Hannah's Frugal Kitchen.  Later I made one of my favorite treats, brownies.  These were straight from the King Aurthur Flour site, and they are called "wicked easy", for a reason!  They are also, "wicked delicious".  I'm talking, thank goodness I only made one batch, because as long as they're in my house, I'll keep eating them - delicious!

Then, my mother called and asked if I wanted my "usual" birthday dinner.  She, of course, made me her traditional lasagna.  Being that I don't actually have that recipe, and because I'm too lazy to ask Mom for it, I can't share it with you.  I can tell you this . . .it's different from other lasagnas.  It's slightly sweet.  Its earthy flavor is enhanced with traces of cinnamon and  . . . . .cloves!!!  I didn't know that until Sunday.  All these years . . . cloves in the lasagna.  Who knew?   That's right, Mom knew.  And she makes it just right.  To top that off, she made a delightful German Chocolate Cake Bar.  I would share that with you, but I don't have that either.  I just go to Mom's house!

Now, you'd think that I'd be done with my selfishness, but I'm not.  What is for dinner tonight, for my actual birthday?  Vegetable soup and my homemade dinner rolls.  Why is that selfish?  We had soup last night, too.  Real men don't eat soup for dinner twice in one week, but this week, my guys will.  Why?  Because, "It's my birthday, I can eat what I want to . . . "

Little Helper

Little Man "helped" me unload the groceries.  He thought it was great fun!

He definitely left his mark.

He is also wearing the evidence.  Little helpers are a blessing.

Roman Road

Two more steps on the way to learning the Romans Road ~

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

and

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23

Yesterday, I worked on Romans 5:8.  Today, I will finish learning Romans 6:23.  Then I will be two thirds of the way through learning the Romans Road.

Walking the Romans Road

First came Romans 3:10
"As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one."

That was from memory, by the way.  Next, I'm going to hop on over to Romans 3:23.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
~Romans 3:23

Funny thing is, I know this verse too.  I just don't usually remember the reference, or the fact that it is the second verse in the Romans Road.  I will work on these all day, working to remember them together.

Do you ever get the feeling that you are doing something that you should have done years ago?  My nine year old already knows these verses, thanks to the AWANA and OLYMPIAN clubs that he's enjoyed over the last few years.  Well, better late than never.  It feels good to memorize something that I've wanted to since I was a teenager.

Next up?  That'll be Romans 5:8 . . . .

Words to Live by Wednesday - Roman Road

Confession time . . . . I promised to learn the "Roman Road" this month for my Sunday School Class Challenge.  My procrastinating self is now three weeks behind.  I am promising now, and making this commitment online.  I am starting - TODAY!!!!  First comes Romans 3:10.

"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
~ Romans 3:10

OK, so I know that one already.  (Jenny, you're right about that).  Now, I just need to memorize the reference.  I'm going to know it by heart by the end of the day.  Big Brother is going to help me!  Nothing like writing down something in a public place to keep me accountable!  So, is there anything you have been putting off that you can start today?

When a Baby Becomes a Boy

When does a baby become a boy?  I've seen it happen three times under my very own roof.  They grow.  They talk.  They walk.  Then one day, you look at them . . . and know.  Your precious baby is now - a boy.  It is not that they were not genetically all boy before, it's just that they are now . . . ALL BOY.  Their emotions, their play, their sense of humor - they move from that baby world to that world of little boy.  My youngest is there now.  I don't want to admit it.  I will probably still call him "baby", just because he is still my baby.  But, now, he is - ALL BOY.  How do I know?  The proof is in the picture . . .
"A Boy, a Ball and a Stick"
- You just can't get more "boy" than that!

What's Missing???

Here's a question for you  . . . What is missing from a home that has neither little girls or cats?

This beautiful cat was taken for a fall walk by the lovely little niece that lives next door.

It was so much fun to see the creative play that a sweet little niece comes up with!

Funny Big Brother

Last week, in good humored exasperation, I said to Big Brother, "What am I going to do with you?"

Big Brother quickly retorted, "Love me, feed me, and never deceive me!"

That boy made me laugh so hard, I cried.

When I asked where he heard that, he said, "I read it in Garfield!"

Words to Live by Wednesday

One of my favorite bedtime songs that I sing to my boys is from Psalm 4.

"I will both lie down in peace, and sleep;
For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety."
~ Psalm 4:8

Follow The Leader

Once upon a time, some children went for a walk.

They played follow the leader.

It's so hard to keep up when your legs are shorter than the others'.

"Oh look, what a pretty leaf!"
(It's so hard to keep up when your attention span is shorter than the others').

Who Lives Here?

Last week, we went for a walk.  My sister-in-law wanted to show the kids some different mushrooms that were growing nearby.  I was amazed at how beautiful they are.  If you use your imagination, you can just picture a tiny, little person making one of these their home!  We had just read "Thumbelina" for Brother In The Middle's school, and my imagination was running wild.  I could just picture her stepping out of one of these and waving good morning to us.  Kindergarten is so much fun!

Fall Photos For Friday

I love fall.  It is my very, very, very (ok, you get the idea) favorite season.  My favorite sound is that pleasant crunch, crunch of the leaves under your feet.  Oh me, oh my, I love the sound of fall!

A Funny thing Happened The Other Day . . .

One afternoon, the boys and I were standing outside the front door.  I was trying multiple keys to unlock the front door, because after almost nine years of living in the same house, I still can't tell you which silver key on my key ring is the house key.  Then Big Brother patiently says, "Mom, don't you know that the key that says DEFIANT on it, is the house key?"  Pause . . . . yes, he's right.  Hmmmm . . . . it would take nine years and my nine year old to figure that out.  Life can really humble you sometimes!!!!

Word To Live By Wednesday

I wanted to share this hymn with you today.  It doesn't fall into my usual format of sharing a Bible verse on Wednesday, but I've been singing it all day long.  Since the Lord put it in my heart today, I thought I'd put it here for you.

Love Lifted Me

I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more,
But the Master of the sea, heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me, now safe am I.

Love lifted me!
Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me!

All my heart to Him I give, ever to Him I’ll cling
In His bless├Ęd presence live, ever His praises sing,
Love so mighty and so true, merits my soul’s best songs,
Faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs.

Love lifted me!
Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me!

Souls in danger look above, Jesus completely saves,
He will lift you by His love, out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, billows His will obey,
He your Savior wants to be, be saved today.

Love lifted me!
Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help,
Love lifted me!

Play-Doh Time

There are so many firsts for little guys.  Little Man got to experience his first play-doh time.

Look at those adorable, chubby, little hands.  He squeezed the play-doh for the first time and laughed.  He poked his fingers into it and laughed some more.  He laughed as I rolled it out with him.  He smiled and laughed the entire time he played with it.  He even managed not to eat (much) play-doh.  It is so much fun to see things through a child's eyes.

Soccer Season Is Here Again

Soccer season is here.  We are over halfway through the season, so I thought it was time to share some pictures of our soccer stars.

Team conference time.

Watching and waiting.

Here it comes!

Part of the action.
